CANAKKALE
Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard on Tuesday arrived in Turkey's northwestern province of Canakkale to attend ceremonies to commemorate Australian soldiers who fell during the 1915 Canakkale Campaign of the First World War.
Gillard is set to participate in a ceremony at dawn on Wednesday at the Gelibolu Peninsula where Anzacs first set foot 97 years ago with thousands of Australians and New Zealanders to pay their respects to their ancestors who lost their lives in the battlefields of Canakkale.
Julia is also scheduled to meet Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan in the Turkish capital, Ankara, and discuss preparations for the 100th anniversary commemorations of the Canakkale Campaign in 2015.
