AYDIN, Turkey
The death toll from Tuesday’s migrant boat accident in the Aegean Sea rose to three on Wednesday.
At least 25 people went missing when a boat and a dinghy sank in the region.
A total of 20 people were rescued in the Aegean Sea after Tuesday’s incident, according to statements from the governorship of Turkey’s Aydin province.
The Turkish Coast Guard recovered one body and 13 survivors while Greek vessels found seven people.
Search-and-rescue operations began again on Wednesday morning and found one female and one male victim off the coast of Didim, a town in Aydin province. The bodies were taken to Didim State Hospital.
The hospital did not give any information about the first body recovered from the water.
Five Coast Guard boats, one search plane and one rescue helicopter are looking for missing people, according to the Aydin governor’s office.
The Aegean Sea is one of the most frequently used routes for illegal migrants trying to reach the EU countries.
