Turkish dailies mainly cover an investigation that started yesterday with detentions of a number of people, deaths of four soldiers in an army helicopter crash in Ankara, a decision by the European Court of Human Rights regarding Switzerland and the abduction of a Turkish journalist in Syria.
MILLIYET says under its headline “Shock Operation” that numerous of people including the sons of three ministers, businessmen Ali Agaoglu and Reza Zarrab and a group of bureaucrats were detained by security forces in Istanbul and Ankara.
HABER TURK says on its front page that 52 individuals have been taken under detention and 7 others are sought for in relation to a corruption probe. It also quotes Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan as saying on the recent detentions that it is a judicial process and it would not be correct to comment before the process ends.
HURRIYET says that the operation, now named as, “The Big Bribe”, started with the detentions of prominent singer Ebru Gundes’s husband businessman Reza Zarrab of Iranian descent, and the sons of Interior Minister Muammer Guler, Economy Minister Mehmet Zafer Caglayan and Environment and Urbanization Minister Erdogan Bayraktar.
SABAH on the front page says that 4 soldiers, including a major and a second lieutenant were killed in a helicopter crash in near Golbasi, Ankara on Tuesday. A soldier survived the accident of Skorsky 70 helicopter, the daily says.
TODAY’S ZAMAN says that the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) upheld an appeal by Turkey’s Workers’ Party (IP) Chairman Dogu Perincek, who was convicted by Switzerland for denying the so-called “Armenian genocide”, saying the politician had exercised his right to free speech.
MILLIYET uses the headline “We are waiting for Bunyamin” to report the abduction of its photojournalist Bunyamin Aygun who was kidnapped in Syria where he was to cover the news. The daily says that the journalist was abducted 22 days ago and as advised by Turkish foreign ministry, it did not report about the abduction until today. The daily also says that the state agencies are doing their best to save Aygun from captivity.
HURRIYET says on its sports pages that Besiktas football club applied to the Turkish Football Federation for a review for a replay of Kasimpasa-Besiktas game, in which Besikas believes a mistake of football rules was made by the referee.
