AFYONKARAHİSAR, Turkey
Turkey’s main opposition, the Republican People's Party (CHP), is trying to create an atmosphere of mistrust in the country as it has done in the past during the 1960 and 1980 coups, said Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
“The foreign organizations are acting as a mouthpiece of the opposition’s negative propaganda while criticizing freedoms and freedom of press in Turkey,’’ Erdogan said. ‘’The same organizations cannot dare to criticize their monarch, prime minister, opposition leader and other leadership of the country.”
Erdogan spoke at the incumbent AK Party’s Consultation meeting in the western Afyonkarahisar province on Saturday. He said the CHP has always been the only ‘enemy of freedoms’ in Turkey and has played a leading role in the orchestration of all coups in the country, including the May 27, 1960 and September 12, 1980 coups.
Turkey has seen major military coups on May 27, 1960 and September 12, 1980 as well as several coup attempts. One of Turkey’s Former Prime Ministers, Adnan Menderes, was executed with his two ministers following the May 27, 1960 military coup.
Erdogan, also said that AK Party will announce its presidential candidate by the end of May or mid-June at latest at the opening.
