ANKARA (AA) - August 27, 2012 - A Turkish physician was elected the head of the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC), a leading nongovernmental organization for cancer control.
Prof. Dr. Tezer Kutluk at the Department of Pediatrics at Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine became the first ever Turkish doctor to be elected the chair of UICC.
Kutluk will serve as the elected president of the union between 2012-2014, the president between 2014-2016 and the former president between 2016-2018.
Speaking to AA correspondent on Monday, Kutluk said that Turkish physicians achieved important successes in all fields in medicine in the world.
UICC has been following developments in regard to cancer control and took important roles in cancer control policies, he said.
Kutluk is a pediatric oncologist. He has worked as a Postdoctoral fellow and Fullbright scholar at MD Anderson Cancer Center USA (1992-94). Associate editor of Turkish Journal of Cancer. Member of SIOP, ASCO, COG, International Children's Center. He had served as the director of Hacettepe University Oncology Hospital during 1999-2008, president of Hacettepe University Institute of Oncology (2004-2008) and member of Turkish Association for Cancer Research and Control since 1985 (TACRC). He also served as president of European Cancer Leagues (2009-2011).
In addition to his academic success with more than 100 publication in peer reviewed scientific journals and more than 350 citation in international medical Journals, his experience on healthcare management during the last 15 years brought him the CEO position of Hacettepe University Hospitals in 2008.
UICC is a leading voice for cancer control and the organization's reputation for being independent and objective has been earned over many decades.
