ANKARA
Costa Rica have at least temporarily become the surprise leaders of the World Cup's Group D with a shock 3-1 victory of Uruguay in northeastern city Fortaleze on Saturday.
Uruguay took the lead at the Estadio Castelao in the 24th minute when striker Edison Cavani stroked in a penalty but Costa Rica staged a confident second-half comeback.
Costa Rica generally dominated the game after half-time and managed to equalize in the 54th minute through 21-year old forward Joel Campbell, who became the youngest player to ever score in a World Cup.
Three minutes later Costa Rican defender Oscar Duarte gave Costa Rica the lead when he bravely headed in from a deep, searching free-kick.
The Central American side played more confidently after the second goal and clinched the victory when Marcos Urena, a second-half substitute for captain Bryan Ruiz, chased down a through ball from Campbell and slipped a third goal past Uruguay goalkeeper Fernando Muslera in the 84th minute.
Just before the final whistle Uruguayan full back Maximiliano Pereira was sent off after he lost his temper and kicked Costa Rica forward Campbell.
The other game in the fiercely competitive group is being played between England and Italy at the Arena Amazonia in Manaus.
