Argentina barely won against Switzerland 1-0 after extra time of the 2014 FIFA World Cup Round of 16 game played at Arena de Sao Paulo, on Tuesday.
Argentina finally scored the winning goal when Angel Di Maria found the net after 118 minutes of play. Real Madrid winger Di Maria made a calm finish in the box after Lionel Messi's crisp pass, clinching the victory for La Albiceleste (The White and Sky Blue) who advance to the quarterfinals.
The Swiss showed great teamwork surrounding Argentinian star Lionel Messi with multiple defenders each time he touched the ball. Still, the South Americans had their chances.
In the 62nd minute, Argentinian forward Gonzalo Higuain's strong header was blocked by Swiss goalkeeper Diego Benaglio.
In the 78th minute, Argentina attempted to score again, but this time with Lionel Messi. Barcelona's genius smashed the ball after entering the box but Benaglio did not let the ball go in.
And the Swiss did not just rely on defense…
In the 39th minute of the play, Swiss forward Josip Drmic squandered a great chance as he tried to chip the ball over the Argentinian goalkeeper, Sergio Romero, in a one-on-one, but Romero saved it easily.
In overtime, Swiss midfielder Blerim Dzemaili squandered a chance by hitting the post.
Argentinian forward Messi was named the man of the match.
In the quarter finals, Argentina will take on the winners of Belgium vs USA.
