WASHINGTON
Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush said Tuesday that he will "actively explore the possibility of running for president of the United States" in 2016.
Bush, who made the announcement in a Facebook post, said he reached the decision after “conversations and thoughtful consideration of the kind of strong leadership I think America needs.”
The former governor served 8 years as the head of the 4th most populous state in US and is a brother of former President George W. Bush and son of former President George H. W. Bush.
He said he will establish a political action committee to help him “facilitate conversations with citizens across America to discuss the most critical challenges facing our exceptional nation."
As the first Republican to come this far in formally announcing his candidacy, the move will speed up the pace of the presidential race as a host of prominent Republicans are likely to announce their intentions to run for the office, including New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul, and Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas.
Because of his strong political pedigree and backing from the Republican establishment, Bush can raise substantial amounts of money for his campaign in what promises to be a crowded field of contenders.
