Egypt's foreign ministry has regretted an African Union decision to suspend its membership over the army’s removal of President Mohammad Morsi.
“This decision has been taken based on misinformation and without taking into consideration what happened in Egypt on July 3" when Morsi was ousted, spokesman Badr Abdulati said in a statement obtained by Anadolu Agency.
Morsi, who was elected last year, was overthrown by the military on July 3, after millions of Egyptians took to the streets to demand his resignation.
The AU decided on Friday to suspend Egypt’s decision over the overthrow.
The AU said the suspension is the union's usual response to any interruption of constitutional rule by a member state.
“The overthrow was due to popular calls represented in the protests of millions of Egyptians to demand early election,” the Egyptian spokesman said.
Abdulai noted that the army intervention was in response to popular demands and avert a civil war.
"Egypt expects from the its brotherly African countries to provide their utmost support to the Egyptian people in this critical stage.”
