South Sudan's army said Monday that 24 rebels were killed in an attack on Renk County in the north of the restive African state.
Army spokesman Philip Aguer said that army forces repelled a rebel attack on northern Renk County and captured two rebels.
Five army soldiers were killed in the rebel attack, he added at a press conference.
The spokesman said that army troops had also seized arms from the rebels during the attack.
South Sudan has been shaken by violence since last December, when President Salva Kiir accused sacked vice president Riek Machar of leading a failed coup attempt against his regime.
Hundreds of thousands of South Sudanese have since been displaced in fighting between the two rivals, which has led to an increasingly dire humanitarian situation.
In recent months, the warring camps have held on-again, off-again peace talks in Addis Ababa under the auspices of Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), a Djibouti-based regional bloc.
