Oman’s Sultan Haitham bin Tariq met with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on Sunday to discuss the “evolving” regional situation and mediation efforts to end the war between Iran, the US, and Israel.
The meeting took place at Al Barakah Palace in the Omani capital, Muscat, the Omani Foreign Ministry said on the US social media company X.
The discussions included an exchange of Omani and Iranian perspectives on regional developments, it added.
“His Majesty the Sultan affirmed the importance of prioritising the language of dialogue and diplomacy in the resolution of outstanding issues, thereby contributing to the consolidation of the foundations of lasting peace.”
According to the ministry, Araghchi expressed Tehran’s appreciation for Oman’s “firm” stance in supporting dialogue initiatives and strengthening efforts to promote security and stability in the region, amid current regional challenges.
Iran’s state-run broadcaster IRIB said the consultations took up “the latest developments in the regional situation, mediation efforts, and efforts aimed at ending the conflicts.”
Oman has been acting as a mediator in the conflict and hosted diplomatic talks to defuse tensions before the US and Israel launched joint strikes on Iran on Feb. 28.
The talks between Sultan Haitham and Araghchi came as efforts are underway to revive stalled talks between Tehran and Washington following weeks of regional escalation.
The first round of negotiations was held in the Pakistani capital, Islamabad, two weeks ago but failed to produce an agreement to end the war.
The talks followed a two-week ceasefire brokered by Pakistan on April 8, which was later extended by US President Donald Trump.
