JERUSALEM/ISTANBUL

Israeli police released a soldier accused of running over a Palestinian man while he was praying near the city of Ramallah in the occupied West Bank and placed him under house arrest after questioning, Israeli media reported Friday.

Police announced Thursday that they had arrested and questioned a reserve soldier after a video circulated online showing him striking a Palestinian man who was praying on the side of a road near Ramallah, the Israeli daily Haaretz said.

The soldier was released under strict conditions and placed under house arrest for five days. He was also barred from approaching the village of Deir Jarir, where the incident occurred, or contacting anyone connected to the case, the newspaper reported.

Police said they are coordinating with the Israeli army as part of the investigation, which also involves the soldier firing his weapon inside the village, Haaretz reported.

The Israeli army confiscated the soldier’s weapon and ended his military service “due to the seriousness of the incident,” the newspaper said.

Israel’s public broadcaster KAN said Thursday that a video circulating online shows a reservist driving a four-wheeled all-terrain vehicle and running over a Palestinian man who was praying on the side of the road in Deir Jarir, near Ramallah.

Local sources told Anadolu on Thursday that the Palestinian suffered bruises after an "illegal Israeli settler" deliberately ran him over with a four-wheeled vehicle while he was praying at the village entrance.

The sources said a group of illegal settlers stormed the area and also attacked Palestinian vehicles, while footage of the incident spread on local Palestinian platforms.

Israeli forces and illegal settlers have killed at least 1,103 Palestinians in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, injured nearly 11,000, and detained around 21,000 since October 2023, Palestinian figures showed.

In a landmark opinion last July, the International Court of Justice declared Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territory illegal and called for the evacuation of all settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.
