JERUSALEM

Sirens sounded in central and northern Israel on Sunday after missile barrages from Iran and Lebanon as escalation continues to spread across the region.

The Israel Hayom daily said missiles were detected from Iran, triggering alarms in Jerusalem and several areas across central Israel.

A military statement said that missiles were intercepted by air defenses in central Israel, without giving any further details.

The barrage was the 7th wave of missiles fired by Iran toward Israel since midnight.

Sirens also blared out across northern Israel, including Haifa, Acre and Krayot after a rocket barrage from Hezbollah in southern Lebanon.

Israeli media said that some of the rockets were intercepted, while others landed in open areas.

Israel and the US have launched a joint offensive on Iran since Feb. 28, killing so far over 1,340 people, including then-Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. Tehran retaliated with drone and missile strikes targeting Israel, Iraq, Jordan and Gulf countries hosting US military assets.

Israel has also pounded Lebanon with airstrikes and launched a ground offensive in the south since a cross-border attack by Hezbollah on March 2.

Lebanese authorities said that 1,142 have since been killed and 3,315 others wounded in the Israeli assault.
