3 Saudi nationals drown in Arabian Sea off Karachi

KARACHI, Pakistan

Three Saudi nationals drowned in the Arabian Sea off southern port city of Karachi on Saturday, police and local media reported.

Two diplomatic employees and son of an official of Saudi consulate in Karachi went to famous Hawksbay beach for picnic in western district of the metropolis, A.D Khawaja, the inspector general of Sindh province, of which Karachi is the capital, told Anadolu Agency.

"I can confirm the death of 3 persons who have been identified as Saudi nationals," Khawaja said.

Local broadcaster Dunya TV, quoting unnamed police officials, reported that two bodies had been pulled out by the rescuers, while search for the third one was underway.

Another local TV channel 92 News reported that the third victim was pulled out in unconscious condition, and shifted to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

There was no immediate comment from the Saudi consulate.

Hawksbay -- a famous attraction for picnickers -- is equally notorious for drowning incidents especially during the monsoon season -- June, July and August -- when the sea turns rough. Lack of proper watch towers, lifeguards and other facilities also add to the casualties.

In August 2014, at least 46 picnickers had drowned in the Arabian sea during Eid holidays apparently ignoring a warning against swimming.
