Protest held in Italy over Israel's adoption of death penalty law targeting Palestinian prisoners
Demonstrators chant slogans including 'Freedom for Palestine' and 'We are all Palestinians'
ROME
A protest was held Thursday in the northern Italian city of Milan against the Israeli parliament’s passage of a law making death by hanging a default sentence for Palestinians convicted in military courts of deadly attacks.
Hundreds of people gathered near the Duomo Cathedral in the city center waving Palestinian flags to protest the controversial law approved Monday by the Israeli Knesset.
During the protest, demonstrators frequently chanted slogans such as "Freedom for Palestine," "We are all anti-Zionists," "We are all Palestinians," "Free Palestine from the river to the sea" and "Zionists, get out of Palestine."
Another protest against the death penalty is scheduled for Friday in Naples.
Under the law, executions are to be carried out by guards appointed by the Israeli Prison Service whose identities remain secret and protected from legal accountability.
