Thousands of Syrians rallied across the country Tuesday and Wednesday in protest against Israel’s newly approved law allowing the death penalty for Palestinian prisoners.

According to Anadolu correspondents and videos shared on social media, demonstrations swept through Damascus and its countryside, Daraa, Quneitra, Homs, Hama, Latakia, Aleppo, Idlib and other provinces.

Protesters denounced the Israeli law and voiced support for Palestinian prisoners and Gaza.

Demonstrators waved Syrian and Palestinian flags and held banners calling for the law to be repealed, while vowing to continue their protests.

Crowds marched through streets and neighborhoods on foot, in cars and on motorcycles amid growing public anger.

Palestinian refugee camps in Syria, including Yarmouk in Damascus, Neirab in Aleppo and Al-Raml in Latakia, also joined the protests despite rain and cold weather.

In Daraa and Quneitra, demonstrators moved toward the occupied Syrian Golan in an attempt to deliver their message, prompting Israeli forces to fire illumination flares to disperse them, according to witnesses.

On Monday, Israel’s Knesset approved a law imposing the death penalty on Palestinian prisoners.

Under the law, executions would be carried out by hanging by guards appointed by the Israeli Prison Service, whose identities would remain secret and protected from legal accountability.
