Bahrain warns UN Security Council over Iran’s Hormuz threats to global trade
‘These actions endanger energy security, food supplies and global trade,’ says foreign minister
HAMILTON, Canada
Bahrain has submitted a draft resolution to the UN Security Council over Iran’s effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz to international navigation, with a vote expected Friday.
Speaking at a Council session on cooperation between the UN and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), Foreign Minister Abdullatif bin Rashid Al-Zayani said the draft aligns with international law and urged a “decisive response to such actions that are irresponsible and illegitimate.”
Bahrain currently holds the rotating presidency of the Security Council for April.
“We look forward to a unified position for this esteemed Council during the vote that will take place on the draft resolution tomorrow,” he said.
Al-Zayani warned that Iran’s threats to restrict navigation through the waterway endanger far beyond the region, stressing such actions threaten “energy security, food supplies, and global trade.”
He also welcomed UN Security Council Resolution 2817, saying it recognizes that disruptions to the strait “could have serious implications for international trade and global economic stability.”
Condemning what he described as “illegal” Iranian ballistic missile and drone strikes on Gulf states and Jordan, he said the attacks were “meticulously pre-planned, thus reflecting Iran's aggressive intentions,” targeting civilian infrastructure including “airports, ports, hotels, energy facilities, factories, universities, food security services” and residential areas, causing “significant losses in life and property.”
Al-Zayani reaffirmed Bahrain’s commitment to multilateralism, saying “a better future for humanity requires an active international partnership that is founded on the values of peace, co-operation, and human fraternity.”
