LONDON
The British government has announced it will introduce “enhanced screening” for the Ebola virus at the country’s three main ports of entry.
In a statement late Thursday, it said the screening would “offer an additional level of protection to the UK.”
“Enhanced screening will initially be implemented at London’s Heathrow and Gatwick airports and Eurostar terminals and will involve assessing passengers’ recent travel history, who they have been in contact with and onward travel arrangements as well as a possible medical assessment.”
The government also announced that trained medical personnel would carry out the checks, not border force staff. In addition, passengers will be given advice on what to do if they develop symptoms of Ebola.
It added that the overall risk to the public from the virus was still very low – there are no direct flights to the affected countries from the U.K.
“Contingency planning is also underway including a national exercise and wider resilience training to ensure the UK is fully prepared,” the government said.
