US President Donald Trump and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz on Sunday spoke over the phone and discussed the latest situation in Iran, Israel and Ukraine.

"This afternoon, I discussed the situation in Iran, Israel and Ukraine with the US President Donald Trump," the chancellor said on US-based social media company on X.

Merz noted that they agreed to remain in "close contact” and that their discussion will continue “soon.”

On Friday, the chancellor said he would meet with Trump. "Although he may not be happy to speak with me right now," he added.

Despite all disagreements, the chancellor said he would continue working for good relations with Washington, stressing that he did not want to give up the partnership between the US and Europe.

Trump had called on European leaders, NATO allies, to help ensure the security of the Strait of Hormuz, but he received negative responses from many European leaders, including Merz.
