Sweden pledges $7.5B in aid to support Ukraine by 2027

LONDON/ISTANBUL

Sweden announced Thursday 9.2 billion kronor ($928,000) in military aid to Ukraine and aims to increase the total to 70 billion kroner in the next two years.

Ukraine is Sweden's most important foreign policy priority, Defense Minister Pal Jonson said at a news conference, presenting the government's new support for Ukraine.

The package amounts include additional artillery systems, ammunition, and a radar system.

Strengthening Ukraine's naval defense means strengthening Sweden's security, according to the government, as reported by the Swedish broadcaster SVT.

Also presenting the framework for further support in the coming years, the defense minister said Sweden wants to increase military support worth $7.5 billion by 2027.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy welcomed the announcement as "a significant contribution to the security of our continent."

He stressed the long-term commitment sends a clear signal to Moscow and to Europe about Ukraine’s resilience and its allies’ determination.

"The new package and commitment to extend long-term support are thus a significant contribution to the security of our continent. It is equally important to maintain the tempo and implement all joint initiatives aimed at bringing guaranteed peace," he said on Telegram.

In March, Sweden unveiled its largest military aid package for Ukraine worth $1.6 billion, developed with Kyiv and international partners to meet urgent battlefield needs.

Of that amount, about $900 million was allocated for new equipment purchases from Swedish, Nordic, and European defense industries, while $500 million supported international funds and multilateral initiatives.

The package also included donations from the Swedish Armed Forces. With that commitment, Sweden’s total military support to Ukraine since 2022 reached $7.6 billion.
