Italy: 2 police officers injured in anti-curfew protest

ROME

At least two police officers were injured Sunday in protests against coronavirus restrictions in Rome, according to local media.

Protesters, led by the far-right Forza Nuova party, gathered at Popolo Square -- one of the busiest squares – to demonstrate against Prime Minister Guiseppe Conte and his government’s “health dictatorship” and a curfew.

Italy extreme right activists protest against the curfew

ROME, ITALY - OCTOBER 24: A protester against the curfew waves an Italian flag in Rome, Italy, on October late 24, 2020. The day after riots happened in Naples between police and protesters against the curfew imposed by Campania region's governor Vincenzo De Luca, extreme right activists newly challenged anti-riot police officers lined up in central Piazza del Popolo in order to enforce the curfew decided by Lazio region's governor Nicola Zingaretti in order to contain the contagion of Covid-19. Protesters said the restrictive measures to stem the spread of the novel coronavirus have caused financial problems.

Others said the restrictions were against the law and their right to work should not be violated.

Around 300 demonstrators chanted slogans demanding “freedom.”

As demonstrators began throwing bottles and sound bombs at police and journalists, and broke a curfew that started at midnight, police tried to disperse the crowd.

Protestors then lit rubbish bins on fire and small clashes occurred on back streets.

Ten protesters were arrested, local media reported.
