Belgium to participate in international reconnaissance mission in Greenland
Defense Ministry will send officer to Arctic region
LONDON
Belgium will take part in an international reconnaissance mission in Greenland starting Jan.19, as NATO continues to strengthen its focus on security in the Arctic.
The Belgian armed forces will deploy one officer to the region as part of the mission, which is being conducted under Danish command, Foreign Minister Maxime Prevot announced on US-based social media company X.
The initiative is part of NATO’s efforts to enhance military presence and expand training opportunities in the Arctic -- a region seen as increasingly strategic.
Several allied nations are participating in the reconnaissance mission, which includes France, Germany, the UK, Sweden and Norway.
“This reconnaissance mission fully aligns with our efforts to strengthen international cooperation. The Arctic region requires a common approach from all allies, and Belgium is pleased to assume its responsibilities in this regard,” said Prevot.
“The security of the Arctic region is of strategic importance to the entire Alliance. By participating in this mission, we demonstrate our commitment within NATO and contribute to collective efforts to secure this strategically important region,” said Defense Minister Theo Francken.
The mission’s objective is to identify potential opportunities for future military exercises in Greenland, as well as options to increase military presence for deterrence and defense purposes in the geostrategic region.
Greenland, a self-governing territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, has attracted US interest due to its strategic location and vast mineral resources, as well as alleged concerns about rising Russian and Chinese activity.
Denmark and Greenland have rejected proposals to sell the territory, reaffirming Danish sovereignty over the island.
Several European countries are boosting their military presence in Greenland through exercises and reconnaissance missions, while US President Donald Trump has insisted the territory should be "in the hands of the US" to counter Russia and China.
