‘Europe has woken up’: German chancellor assures Danish, Greenlandic leaders of support
Merz says Germany will do more for High North security within NATO framework
BERLIN
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz on Tuesday met with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen in Berlin to extend his government's support amid continued tensions with the US administration.
"Europe has woken up. Our European unity has contributed to the negotiation success for Greenland," Merz said on social media following the meeting. "Germany will increase its commitment as a NATO partner to security in the High North. I have assured this to Mette Frederiksen and Jens-Frederik Nielsen."
While US President Donald Trump has moderated his rhetoric on Greenland following last week's meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte in Davos, tensions over US demands remain unresolved.
Following the Davos meeting, Trump announced a framework deal on Greenland, aimed at addressing US security concerns. The specifics of the plan remain undisclosed. Several media reports have claimed the deal would designate US military bases in Greenland as US sovereign territory.
Trump has repeatedly said that the US must acquire Greenland for national security reasons and to deter rivals such as China and Russia in the Arctic. Both Denmark and Greenland—a self-governing territory within the Kingdom of Denmark—have so far rejected any proposal to sell the territory or cede sovereignty.
