Jean-Noel Poirier took office on Friday as consul general in Nuuk, as France became the first EU nation to establish a Consulate General in Greenland, according to the Foreign Ministry.

In a statement, the Foreign Ministry said Poirier arrived in Greenland and took office as French consul general in Nuuk.

"In accordance with the announcements made by President Macron in Greenland in June 2025, the Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs is increasing its consular network and becomes the first European Union country to set up a consulate general in Greenland," it noted.

The new consul general will be actively engaged in serving Greenland’s French community and tasked with working to deepen existing cultural, scientific, and economic cooperation projects with Greenland, according to the statement.

The ministry noted that deep ties of friendship and key joint projects already link France, Denmark, and Greenland, stressing that France reiterates its commitment to respect for Denmark’s territorial integrity.

Macron's announcement came amid US President Donald Trump's renewed interest in American control over Greenland, citing national security concerns related to Russia and China. He also threatened sanctions on European countries that opposed the move to take over the Danish territory.

He withdrew the threats after he met with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte at the World Economic Forum in Davos, saying a framework for a deal involving Greenland and the broader Arctic region was established.

Talks between the US, Denmark, and Greenland began last week to resolve the crisis.
