No reports on damages have been released so far, while earthquake also felt on Crete Island

5.9 magnitude earthquake shakes Greek island of Rhodes

ATHENS 

A 5.9 magnitude earthquake jolted Greece’s southeastern island of Rhodes (Rodos) after 2 p.m. local time (1200GMT).

According to the Athens Geodynamic Institute, the quake occurred 58 kilometers (36 miles) off the coast of the Lindos town of Rhodes.

Athanasios Ganas, the research director of the Geodynamic Institute, told the local daily Kathimerini that they are "still reassessing the final magnitude."

"We are undoubtedly in a period of increased earthquakes in our country" he added.

The quake was felt on Crete Island (Girit) as well, the institute said.

According to local media, residents said the duration of the quake was long while there have been no reports so far on injuries or damages.
