South Korea’s newly elected president vows democratic renewal

South Korea’s newly elected president pledged a new era of democratic restoration, economic recovery and national unity in a televised speech Wednesday from the National Assembly, the Chosun Daily reported.

“Thank you, citizens of the Republic of Korea,” said Lee Jae-myung. “I will never forget the mission you have entrusted to me. I will carry it out without a single misstep.”

Under South Korea’s byelection rules, Lee takes office immediately after certification, with no formal transition.

He recalled the Dec. 3, 2024 coup attempt by former President Yoon Suk Yeol.

“Since that night of insurrection, the people have endured the cold and wind, demanding that this country belong to its ordinary citizens,” he said. “Power must serve the people—not a president’s private interests.”

Lee outlined four priorities: restoring democracy and the rule of law, reviving the economy, building a safer society and securing peace.

“We must ensure that weapons entrusted by the people are never again used against them,” he said, pledging to end military interference in politics.

“I will restore democracy and build a republic where citizens live not with hate and fear, but with dignity and cooperation.”

“From the moment my victory is confirmed, I will devote every effort to recovering your livelihoods—quickly and decisively,” he added.

Urging social harmony, Lee said “we are colleagues living in the same community. Let us move past hate and resentment. Let us build a country where neighbors can rely on one another.”

The National Election Commission (NEC) confirmed Lee as president at 6.21 am local time Wednesday (2121GMT Tuesday), according to Yonhap News Agency.

The new leader will quickly begin his term, with fresh policy decisions expected on issues including US tariffs, the sluggish domestic economy and all-time low ties with North Korea.

Lee's inauguration ceremony will be held at 11 am local time (0200GMT).
