ISTANBUL
Russian mountaineer Natalia Nagovitsyna remains stranded on a snowy peak over 24,400 feet (7,437 meters) in Kyrgyzstan after rescue efforts were halted due to severe weather, while her son shared drone footage and appealed for assistance, convinced she is still alive.
The 47-year-old climber's son shared footage on Tuesday of her waving at a drone set up to monitor her while she was stranded on Victory Peak in Kyrgyzstan, and he called on the Russian Foreign Ministry to help with the rescue effort.
Nagovitsyna reportedly broke her leg on August 12 while attempting to descend Victory Peak, which stands at 24,406 feet (7,439 meters).
Despite multiple rescue attempts, including a second effort in which her friend Luca Sinigaglia tragically died and his body could not be recovered due to extreme weather, she has yet to be found.
The search was halted on Friday, and a final rescue scheduled for Tuesday was canceled due to inclement weather, trapping the mountaineer in freezing minus 30 degrees Celsius (minus 22 degrees Fahrenheit) freezing temperatures.
According to media reports, after the search was called off and rescue helicopters returned to base, authorities stated that Nagovitsyna's body would not be recovered until spring.
