Indonesian president pledges 8,000 'or more' troops to Gaza peacekeeping force
Palestinians 'must exercise full control of the land and their future in line with UN Security Council resolutions,' says Pakistani Premier Sharif at Board of Peace meeting
ISTANBUL
Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto on Thursday pledged 8,000 "or more" troops to the International Stabilization Force in Gaza at the inaugural Board of Peace meeting in Washington.
Despite the obstacles and difficulties, "we are very optimistic that with the leadership of (US) President (Donald) Trump, this vision of real peace will be achieved," he said. "There will be problems, but we will prevail."
"We will achieve our dream of peace in Palestine, a lasting and peaceful solution for the Palestinian problem, and in Gaza," he added.
The achievements of the ceasefire are "real." Therefore, "we reaffirm our commitment to contribute a significant number of troops, up to 8000 or more, if necessary; we are prepared to contribute the troops to take part actively in the International Stabilization Force to make this peace work," Prabowo added.
Separately, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, during the event, urged cooperation "towards a credible pathway to Palestinian self-determination through the establishment of an independent, sovereign and contiguous state of Palestine in line with the relevant resolutions."
"The people of Palestine have long endured illegal occupation and immense suffering, and to achieve long-lasting peace, it is very important that ceasefire violations must end to preserve lives in advance of reconstruction efforts," Sharif said, adding that Palestinians "must exercise full control of the land and their future in line with UN Security Council resolutions."
Sharif also called Trump a true "savior of South Asia." Trump had announced a ceasefire between Pakistan and India on May 10, after an exchange of attacks for four days.
"Your timely and very effective intervention to achieve a ceasefire between India and Pakistan potentially averted the loss of tens of millions of people," Sharif told Trump.
