A Chinese editor was sentenced to seven years in jail on Friday for leaking information to Japan.

A court in Beijing sent Dong Yuyu, who worked at Guangming Daily, to jail after he was detained in February 2022.

He was indicted in March last year for espionage but pleaded not guilty to the charge, Japan’s Kyodo News reported.

Dong, whose trial was closed to the public, was picked by Chinese authorities following his meeting with an official from the Japanese Embassy in Beijing.

China had also temporarily detained the Japanese diplomat who met Dong, saying the official was “engaged in activities inappropriate for his job.”
