Japan's Shinmoe volcano erupts, sending columns of ash as high as 5,500 meters
Japan Meteorological Agency warns residents against approaching crater, maintains level 3 alert on 5-point scale
ISTANBUL
Mt. Shinmoe erupted Thursday in Japan, sending an ash column as high as 5,500 meters (18,044 feet) above the crater, according to the Kyodo news agency, citing a local office of the Japan Meteorological Agency.
The volcano in the southwestern Japanese main island of Kyushu, erupted at 4.53 am (1953GMT Wednesday) for the first time since July 3.
The agency maintained a level 3 alert on a five-point scale and warned residents about approaching the crater in the Miyazaki and Kagoshima prefectures.
Shinmoe, located in the two prefectures, is among the 50 active volcanoes in Japan that are under constant monitoring.
It erupted June 22 for the first time since June 2018.
