WASHINGTON

The Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) announced Friday that it will cease operations after its funding was eliminated under a rescissions bill signed by US President Donald Trump and approved by Congress.

The legislation, enacted last month, slashed $9 billion in already allocated federal spending, including approximately $1 billion earmarked for public broadcasting -- a move that left the CPB financially unsustainable.

The CPB has long provided critical funding for public television and radio networks such as PBS and NPR, which serve millions of Americans with educational, cultural, and news programming.

"Despite the extraordinary efforts of millions of Americans who called, wrote, and petitioned Congress to preserve federal funding for CPB, we now face the difficult reality of closing our operations," CPB President and CEO Patricia Harrison said in a statement.

The organization notified its staff Friday that most positions will end with the close of the current fiscal year on Sept. 30.
