Trump set to finalize new trade deal worth over $10B during UK state visit

WASHINGTON

During his visit to the UK this week President Donald Trump is expected to finalize a new trade deal that will include over $10 billion in new investments, a senior US official said Monday.

"This visit gives the president the opportunity to strengthen ties with a particularly close partner and ally, while advancing mutual economic and foreign policy interests. Our tradition of economic cooperation will continue with a historic trade agreement," said the official, who like others on a briefing call spoke on condition of anonymity.

The trade deal will include a new science and technology partnership with the UK, new US-UK cooperation on civil nuclear power, research, investment, and development, as well as additional action on defense cooperation.

The deals are expected to include investments worth over $10 billion, and perhaps tens of billions of dollars, officials said. The total figure is still being calculated.

Another official said there is expected to be "significant attendance" by American tech CEOs during business roundtable events at Prime Minister Keir Starmer's country residence, known as Chequers, on Thursday.

Trump is slated to begin his three-day official state visit when he arrives in the UK late Tuesday. He will meet with King Charles and Queen Camilla Wednesday before visiting St. George's Chapel at Windsor Castle to privately lay a wreath at the tomb of the late Queen Elizabeth ahead of an official state banquet hosted by the monarchs.

On Thursday, Trump will meet with Starmer before returning to the US. The visit will mark an unprecedented second state visit by a US president.

Ahead of his arrival, the British government announced the UK and US agreed on a deal to build advanced nuclear modular reactors in northeastern England.

The agreement between the UK's Centrica and US firm X-energy will bring more advanced nuclear reactors to Britain, according to the deal, announced a day before the beginning of Trump's state visit.
