Romania's Foreign Minister Oana Toiu spoke with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio over the phone and discussed bilateral cooperation in an array of areas, including defense and security, as well as deepening economic ties.
In a statement on the US social media company X on Friday, Toiu described the talks as a “good discussion” focused on security and economic issues, as well as shared priorities ahead of upcoming high-level and ministerial engagements this year.
“We explored ways to further deepen bilateral cooperation, advancing joint efforts in defense, energy, technology, critical minerals and people to people ties,” she said.
Toiu noted that they consider the relationships between Bucharest and Washington to be important “not just from a bilateral point of view but also as a strong connection in the region.”
“I emphasized Romania’s active contribution to Allied coordination on the Eastern Flank and the increased focus on growing the economic dimension of our strategic partnership,” she said.
Romania’s Foreign Ministry and the US State Department have finalized a formal partnership agreement under the MECEA program, with the first US congressional delegation expected to visit Romania by the end of the year, she added.
