The US National Hurricane Center (NHC) said Tuesday that Hurricane Imelda has strengthened and is heading toward Bermuda, where a hurricane warning is in effect.

A second storm, Hurricane Humberto, is also moving through the western Atlantic, generating dangerous surf and rip currents.

"Swells generated by Hurricane Imelda and Hurricane Humberto are affecting the Bahamas and are currently spreading to much of the US east coast," the NHC said in a public advisory.

Forecasters said Imelda could strengthen over the next two days, bringing hurricane conditions to Bermuda by Wednesday evening.

They added that the island could see 2 to 4 inches (50 to 100 millimeters) of rain, dangerous storm surge and damaging waves.

Hurricane Humberto was about 485 kilometers (300 miles) west of Bermuda with sustained winds near 130 kph (80 mph).

Both storms are sending large swells across the Bahamas and much of the US East Coast.

Imelda, the ninth named storm of the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season, from June through November when most tropical cyclones form in the region, developed Sunday in the western Atlantic.
