Canada's foreign minister dismisses talks about Liberal Party leadership candidacy

HAMILTON, Canada

Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Joly said Friday she would not pursue leadership of the Liberal Party, citing her commitment to addressing pressing international challenges.

Joly explained her decision in a statement on X where she emphasized the importance of prioritizing her current role during a critical period for Canada's foreign relations.

"Over the past week, I have spoken with dozens of friends, colleagues and close advisors; many of whom have encouraged me to run for the leadership of the Liberal Party of Canada," she said.

Noting the historic nature of her potential candidacy as the first woman to lead the party, she pointed to challenges stemming from US President-elect Donald Trump, including the threat of tariffs and other economic pressures, as key reasons for her decision to remain focused on her current role.

"As Minister of Foreign Affairs, I must dedicate every minute of my time and all my energy to defending the interests of Canadians," she said.

Joly thanked supporters for their trust and vowed to remain focused on safeguarding Canada's economy, jobs and values.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau recently announced his resignation from the Liberal Party amid party pressures. His successor will automatically become the prime minister and Liberal Party leader.

Various names, including Joly, are being bandied about to assume Trudeau’s mantle, with some senior Cabinet ministers and others sitting on the fence while they gauge support.
