2 arrested after attempting to enter UK nuclear submarine base
Man, woman detained after approaching sensitive military site in Scotland
LONDON
Two people have been arrested after attempting to enter a UK nuclear submarine base in Scotland, according to British media on Friday.
Officers were called to HM Naval Base Clyde, which houses Britain’s Trident submarines on Thursday after a man and woman approached the site and asked to go inside, the Sun reported.
A 34-year-old man and a 31-year-old woman were detained at the scene. The pair did not gain access to the base.
It is understood that the man is an Iranian national, while the woman’s nationality has not been confirmed.
A spokesperson for the Royal Navy said: “Police Scotland have arrested two people who unsuccessfully attempted to enter HM Naval Base Clyde on Thursday. As the matter is subject to an ongoing investigation, we will not comment further.”
Police said the pair remained in the area after being refused entry and were later arrested on suspicion of acting suspiciously. Their motives are not yet known.
Security sources said it was too early to determine whether the incident was linked to espionage, but acknowledged there are heightened concerns about potential Iran-related threats in the UK.
