Around 57,000 displaced arrive in northern Sudan after RSF attacks in Darfur, Kordofan: Aid commission
Displaced people endured ‘harsh’ conditions during their journey to Northern State, says humanitarian aid commissioner
ISTANBUL
Around 57,000 displaced people arrived in the Sudanese city of Al-Debba in Northern State from Darfur and Kordofan regions due to attacks by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), an aid commission said on Friday.
Kawther Jaafar, the government-appointed humanitarian aid commissioner in Al-Debba, said the displaced endured “harsh” conditions during their journey as they fled “the brutality and violations of the rebel militia.”
She explained that among the displaced are people with wounds and fractures, as well as children suffering from malnutrition.
Among the total number of displaced, 50,000 arrived from the city of El-Fasher, including 32,000 who reached Al-Debba after the city fell to the RSF, she added.
The bloody conflict between the Sudanese army and the RSF, which began in April 2023, has killed thousands of people and displaced millions of others.
Last month, the RSF seized North Darfur's capital El-Fasher, and is accused of carrying out massacres. The group controls all five Darfur states out of Sudan’s 18 states, while the army holds most of the remaining 13 states, including the capital Khartoum.
