Witnesses to half a century of Games: Moscow hosts Winter Olympics torches

MOSCOW

Preparations for the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics are in full swing as Russia seems to have made a point of taking up the torch.

The capital Moscow now plays host to an exhibit, opened by President Vladimir Putin and Monaco Prince Albert in September, which displays the entire set of Winter Olympics torches used since 1952, possibly the most conspicuous of which belongs to the upcoming Sochi event.

The Sochi Games torch has had quite an extraordinary journey. It traveled 2,500 km in Greece, homeland of Olympic Games, then took a space trip in the hands of Russian astronauts, and then dove 13 m deep in Lake Baikal.

The torch has been in display in the capital city since October 7, and will reach Sochi in February after another tortuous voyage through 2,900 residential areas across the nation.

Sochi 2014 is the first Olympic event Russia is hosting since the days of the Soviet Union. The government and the Russian people show great interest in every organization that cherishes the spirit of Olympics.

The torch exhibit is in its last days, closing on November 30.
