KHARTOUM
Sudanese authorities on Thursday freed a female doctor a female doctor previously sentenced to death for "apostasy" and adultery and more recently charged with forging documents, the woman's lawyer said.
Lawyer Mohannad Mustafa added that female doctor Mariam Ibrahim was taken from an eastern Khartoum police station in a U.S. embassy car as soon as she got out of the police station.
Mariam Ibrahim, a female Sudanese doctor, was sentenced to death and 100 lashes last month after being found guilty of apostasy and adultery.
The charges were brought against Ibrahim after she married a Christian man from South Sudan.
Her case drew criticism from international rights groups, which called on Khartoum to respect freedom of religion.
Ibrahim was released on Monday after the charges against her were overturned by the court.
The doctor, however, was rearrested on Tuesday at Khartoum airport on charges of having forged travel documents.
