Thousands of people in The Netherlands marched to condemn the Solingen racist attack which took place twenty years ago in Germany, leaving five members of a Turkish family dead.
Turkish and Dutch people marched in the traditional “Torchlight Procession for Peace and Tolerance” in Eindhoven, commemorating the five members of a Turkish family who had been killed in an arson attack by racist German youngsters on May 29, 1993.
Turkey’s Rotterdam Consul Togan Oral and Eindhoven’s Deputy Mayor Yasin Torunoglu also participated in the memorial service with thousands of people.
“Solingen attack was a brutal one and the sensitivity of Turkish and Dutch people will prevent repitition of such an act,” said Turkish consul Oral.
Deputy mayor of Eindhoven Torunoglu underlined that the commemoration brings together the different cultures in the city.
“All our effort is to build a society based on mutual respect,” Torunoglu said.
The house of a Turkish family was set on fire by extreme rightists in Solingen city of Germany on May 29, 1993. Five people were killed in the arson attack. After the event, four extreme rightist youngsters were arrested. Three of them were sentenced to ten years in prison while the remaining one was sentenced to 15 years in prison.
