Russia accuses Poland of being involved in assassination attempt on high-ranking general
Federal Security Service releases video showing suspect claims he was recruited by Ukrainian Security Service with assistance of Polish intelligence, while Kyiv or Warsaw yet to issue any statement on Moscow's claims
MOSCOW
Russia on Monday accused Poland of being involved in an assassination attempt on a high-ranking general.
The Russian Federal Security Service said in a statement that Lyubomyr Korba, the perpetrator of the assassination attempt on Lt. Gen. Vladimir Alekseyev, was recruited by the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), and his recruitment was carried out with the assistance of Polish intelligence services.
According to the FSB, this information was provided by Lyubomir Korba and Viktor Vasin, who were detained in the case.
The FSB released a video in which one of the suspects, Lyubomir Korba, states that he was recruited by an SBU officer in August 2025 in the Ukrainian city of Ternopil, underwent firearms training at a shooting range in Kyiv, was vetted using a polygraph, instructed on communication methods via the Zoom video conferencing service, and infiltrated into Russia in August 2025 via the Kyiv-Chisinau-Tbilisi-Moscow route.
According to Korba, his son Lubos Korba, a 1998-born Polish citizen residing in the Polish city of Katowice, was involved in his recruitment with the assistance of Polish intelligence services.
He was promised $30,000 for the murder, he said.
Viktor Vasin was a supporter of the Anti-Corruption Foundation, which is recognized as extremist in Russia. He rented an apartment for Korba during the preparation period and provided him with public transport passes for travel.
An assassination attempt was made on Friday against Alekseyev in Moscow, as Korba fired four shots at him with a silenced pistol inside his apartment building. The general was seriously wounded but survived.
Alekseyev holds the position of the deputy head of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Russian General Staff, which adds significant public resonance and political importance to the matter.
On Sunday, the Federal Security Service (FSB) detained Vasin, a suspected accomplice in the attack, in Moscow.
On the same day, Korba, a native of Ukraine, who is alleged to be the direct perpetrator of the crime, was arrested in Dubai with assistance from partners in the UAE and handed over to Russian authorities.
According to FSB data, since the beginning of the armed conflict in Ukraine in February 2022, dozens of attempts on the lives of Russian military personnel and law enforcement officers have been made.
Some have ended fatally, including the killing of Radiation-Chemical Protection Troops Commander General Igor Kirillov, Operational Training Department Chief General Fanil Sarvarov, and Deputy Chief of the Main Operations Department of the General Staff General Yaroslav Moskalik.
Russia classifies the attacks as "terrorist acts." Accused individuals claim they were following orders from Ukraine's Security Service.
Ukrainian intelligence has never directly claimed responsibility, though Western media frequently publishes accounts from alleged SBU representatives taking credit.
Poland or Ukraine has yet to issue any statement regarding Russia's claims.
