Report: Indonesia preparing to execute 10 drug smugglers

JAKARTA

Indonesia’s Attorney General’s Office has issued letters to prosecutors telling them to make preparations to execute 10 drug smugglers on death row.

The ten include nationals from France, Australia, Ghana, Brazil, Nigeria, the Philippines and Indonesia.

Spokesperson for the Attorney General's Office Tony Spontana was quoted on Indonesian website detik.com late Thursday as saying that a letter containing the order of execution had been sent to prosecutors.

Spontana did not elaborate on the exact time of execution, but did underline that they would take place.

He said the Supreme Court still has to give a decision on an appeal by the only Indonesian in the ten, Zainal Abidin.

Indonesia has said it will wait until all appeals have been exhausted before the ten face the firing squad.

"If Zainal's appeal is rejected, it will complete the [appeals of] the inmates," Spontana said.

According to international law, countries must announce the execution of another's nationals at least three days in advance.

Attorney General Muhammad Prasetyo has said that the executions will be carried out after the Asia-Africa Summit finishes on April 24.

The prisoners concerned are: Martin Anderson from Ghana, Zainal Abidin from Indonesia, Raheem Agbajee Salame (Nigeria), Rodrigo Gularte (Brazil), Mary Jane Fiesta Veloso (the Philippines), Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran (Australia), Serge Areski Atlaoi (France), and Okwudili Oyatanze and Sylvester Obiekwe Nwolise (Nigeria).
