THE HAGUE
The Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) said in a statement on Friday that it wants to speed up the process of destroying Syria’s chemical weapons.
The process of transporting chemical weapons from Syria is ongoing, but OPCW’s director general, Ahmet Uzumcu, stressed the need for new methods to prevent any delay in the destruction of Syria’s chemical weapons.
Uzumcu said he informed the council members of his talks with Syria’s officials with regards to the destruction of chemical weapons.
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and Uzumcu both agreed that the process of destroying chemical weapons needs to be speeded up.
According to OPCW’s plan, Syria’s chemical weapons should be safely removed from Syria by February 5 and destroyed by June. However, the organization announced that the destruction of chemical weapons could be delayed.
The OPCW, which issued a fund for destroying chemical weapons abroad, said the first stage of disposing chemical weapons costs up to 40 million euros.
