No 'wave of consequence' yet says Hawaii governor after strong quake in Russia's Far East

ISTANBUL

The Hawaiian Islands have seen no "wave of consequence" after tsunami alerts were issued following an 8.8 magnitude earthquake off Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula, the governor of the US state said Wednesday.

"So far we have not seen a wave of consequence," Josh Green told a news conference, adding, however, that they have observed a significant retreat of water.

It will likely be another two to three hours before they can issue an "all clear,” he added.

Following the massive quake – one of the largest on record – the US Tsunami Warning System issued a warning of tsunami waves along some coasts of Russia, Japan, Alaska, and Hawaii.
