French President Emmanuel Macron said he will officially announce France’s recognition of the State of Palestine at the UN General Assembly in September.
"Faithful to its historic commitment to a just and lasting peace in the Middle East, I have decided that France will recognize the State of Palestine," Macron said on X.
He underscored the urgency of ending the conflict in Gaza and providing aid to civilians affected by the war.
Over 60 members of the European Parliament (MEPs) demanded an emergency meeting to push for actions against Israel in a letter sent to EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas.
Marc Botenga, a Belgian MEP from the Left group, said on X that they had written to Kallas demanding that an emergency meeting of the EU Foreign Affairs Council be convened immediately to propose action against Israel.
"We are writing to you today to demand that immediate action is taken, given the appalling humanitarian situation in Gaza and the continued Israeli attacks on Palestinians at aid distribution sites, which have so far resulted in the deaths of over 1,000 people," the MEPs wrote.
Russia said it sees the humanitarian agreements reached at the third round of renewed peace talks with Ukraine in Istanbul a day earlier as “positive.”
“The continuation of the exchange and return of civilian bodies…is an extremely important humanitarian aspect that, from our point of view, should be on the agenda. But still a positive aspect,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters at a press briefing.
Reiterating that Moscow did not expect a breakthrough in the talks, Peskov said Russian proposals at the meeting were “constructive, specific and aimed specifically at substantive work that can lead to the achievement of specific results.”
