Merkel takes the office

BERLIN

German Chancellor Angela Merkel and the members of cabinet swore before the Federal Parliament on Tuesday after being granted their appointment decrees by German President Joachim Gauck. 

Speaking in the ceremony held in Bellevue Palace to grant the appointment decrees of the German cabinet members, President Gauck underlined the significance of democracy and stability. 

Congratulating the Christian Union Parties (CDU/CSU)  and Social Demokrat Party (SPD) for reaching a compromise after long negotiations, Guack said that one of the most significant merits of democracy is to compromise. "You have proved the signficance of compromise. This behavior of yours deserves appreciation and respect," added Gauck.

President Gauck also said that the coalition government has 4/5 of the seats in German Parliament and German people expect the government to find solutions for serious problems of Germany such as new reforms, problems stemming from demographic change and the debt crisis in Europe. 

Officially taking the office, the coalition government led by Merkel is expected to hold the first session on Tuesday evening.
