GAZA CITY, JERUSALEM
A senior Israeli army officer was killed on Saturday along with a soldier during a foiled attack in the central Gaza Strip, the Israeli army said.
It added in a statement that the officer is a 45-year-old major from Hod Hasharon whose name is Amotz Greenberg and the soldier is a 20-year-old sergeant from Neharyia whose name is Adar Bersano.
The Israeli army added that Bersano was posthumously promoted to the rank of a sergeant.
It said it notified the families of the two men of their death.
The army said further findings of the overnight incident, in which a soldier was severely injured, indicate that his injury was caused by a sniper, not by a discharge.
It added that the soldier's condition has now improved to moderate.
The army noted that two officers were injured severely, three officers moderately, and an officer, as well as five soldiers, lightly, during operations in the Gaza Strip, as part of operation "Protective Edge".
Israeli soldier 'mistakenly' shot himself in Gaza
An Israeli soldier was seriously injured Saturday when he "mistakenly" shot himself in the Gaza Strip, an army source said.
The source said that the soldier was injured during the military operations in the Gaza Strip, according to Israel Radio.
An Israeli soldier has been killed and 17 soldiers injured in clashes with Palestinians gunmen since Thursday, when the Israeli army launched a ground offensive into the Gaza Strip.
Since July 7, Israel has been pounding the Gaza Strip, home to some 1.8 million Palestinians, with crippling air and naval bombardments with the ostensible aim of halting rocket fire emanating from the strip.
At least 339 Gazans have been killed and nearly 2390 injured in the ongoing Israeli attacks, according to health officials in Gaza.
