Irina Bokova, nominated by UNESCO’s Executive Board on October 4, was elected for a second four-year term as Director-General of UNESCO in the organization’s General Conference on Tuesday.
Bokova was first elected Director-General of UNESCO on November 15, 2009.
Over the past four years, Irina Bokova has focused UNESCO’s programme on objectives such as forging a culture of peace, promoting sustainable development and priorities to Africa and gender equality.
Irina Bokova has received honorary degree from many prestigious universities across the world. In addition to her mother tongue, she speaks English, French, Spanish and Russian.
By the way, the US did not participated the election. The US stated it would cut its donations to the Organization as it had approved Palestine as a member state in 2011.
