MOSCOW
The attendance of Iran in the Genava II Conference- planned for January 22 - has not been determined yet, said Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.
Speaking at RT television, Lavrov expressed concerns about the Syrian opposition's attitudes during the conference, and emphasized the difficulty of Syrian opposition groups gathering under a single representation.
Stressing that the conference cannot yield results if parties attend with prerequisites, he said that the Syrian opposition thought that the only outcome of the Geneva II would be a regime change in the country, however, under such a provision, a settlement could not be reached.
Lavrov noted that extensive efforts were exerted to gather the peace conference in order to solve the Syrian crisis, however success was not guaranteed in the conference.
The efforts to destroy Syrian chemical weapons are continuing as they were planned, added Lavrov.
More than 100,000 people have been killed in the more than three year old Syrian conflict, according to the UN, while over two million people have fled the country to seek refuge in other countries, mostly neighboring Jordan, Turkey, Lebanon and Iraq.
