SARAJEVO
Dobrovoljacka incident during the Bosnian War took place 20 years ago when the Bosnian Army caused former Yugoslavian Army (JNA) to get many injuries after the Yugoslavian army captured late President of Bosnia Alija Izzetbegovic at the airport and attempted to seize the presidential building.
Alija Izzetbegovic, his daughter Sabina Berberovic, current Minister of Foreign Affairs Zlatko Lagumdzija were captured at the airport and taken to a military post in Lukavitsa 20 years ago. The real resistance of Sarajevo and Bosnia began on that date.
The bloody tramline attack in which passengers inside were fired on, the attack on Postal Centre, Parliament, the building of State Television and Electricity Centre, and many more buildings took place on May 2. At the same time the planes were spreading terror from above.
While JNA troops were passing through Dobrovoljacka district they encountered with the resistance of Armed Forces of Bosnia and Herzegovina (TO) and the Green Berets.
In the resistance, 20 soldiers of JNA were killed and 200 of them were captured. After that, Alija Izzetbegovic and the ones accompanying him were freed by exchange of 200 captured soldiers.
However, the real resistance had started once again. Due to the occupation, Sarajevo had been left without weapons, food, water, electricity and natural gas for 1,335 days. Sarajevo had to pay back for resistance.
Sarajevo had been under siege for 44 months and 11,541 civilians including 1,600 children had been killed by the Yugoslavian Army and the partisans of the Serbian Democratic Party that was led by murderer Radovan Karadzic who is on trial at the International Court of Justice in The Hague.
-Ejup Ganic talks on what happened on May 2 and 3, 1992-
Ganic was arrested related to the Dobrovoljacka incident in the United Kingdom but was later released. Garic said that people who defended and protected Bosnia are considered as ‘enemy’ of Serbia.
He continued: “I was arrested because of bogus claims of Serbia, but later it was proved that the documents were misleading. They aimed to mislead by inserting misinformation.”
Garic said that May 2 and 3 are the historical dates when decision for defense of Bosnia and Herzegovina had been taken.
Garic also thanked Turkey for its support. He expressed his expectation of the continuation of the relationship between Turkey and Bosnia Herzegovina as Turkey was a democratic and powerful country.
-Serbian origin Bosnian General Jovan Divjak–
Divjak was arrested in Vienna on the complaint of Serbia but later he was freed.
He said that May 2 and 3 were the hardest days of Serbia.
Divjak rejected that the war was on religion.
He said: “If it was on religion, I would be on different side. The resistance was for independence and on May 1 Bosnia and Herzegovina declared its independence which was recognized by the European Union (EU), the USA and other countries.”
Divjak said that people from Bosnian Serb Republic, relatives and friends of Serbian soldiers can come to Dobrovoljacka and lay flowers.
I will also join them if they come to Markale where there was massacre on the bazaar, Divjak said.
He added that one thing must not be forgotten that those who died in Dobrovoljacka were the soldiers of the army that did not have right to be there.
Divjak also said that Bosnian Serbian Republic, Serbia and the EU want to arrest himself, Ejub Ganic and the famous and fabled commander Atif Dudakovic.
